Will Fontanez has called the UT Department of Geography home for 25 years and currently serves as director of cartographic services.
“I jumped at the opportunity to work at UT,” Will said. “It offered security and a working atmosphere I looked forward to being a part of.”
During his time in the department, Will developed the Cartographic Services Laboratory into a nationally recognized mapping facility. He also has mentored many students to successful careers.
“Nine of my students have secured National Geographic internships or positions and four have worked for the CIA Cartographic Division,” Will said.
An avid outdoorsman, Will has enjoyed hiking the Smokies to create trail maps and hanging out of a helicopter to map Farragut, a city in Knox County.
Will and his wife, Susan, have six children: Liz, Allison, Garrett, Kara, Greg and Ryan. In addition to hiking, Will enjoys woodworking and serving as a technical director for the National Gymnastics Judges Association.
