UT’s Mission Toward Change
At the heart of the Grand Challenges Initiatives is a clear purpose: amplify the existing work being done and facilitate new connections that drive meaningful impact across Tennessee. Through collaboration, innovation and community partnerships, we aim to help those in need find solutions to the state’s most pressing challenges.
Since the revision of the university’s strategic plan in 2021, addressing Grand Challenges has been a key priority. Two pillars of the plan directly support this mission:
- Outreach and Engagement – Transforming Tennessee’s critical challenges into strengths and elevating the state into the top 50% nationally.
- Advocating for UT – Increasing public understanding of UT’s impact and value.
Together, these pillars — grounded in a foundation of safety, connection and collaboration — are shaping what we call the greatest decade in university history.

- Cultural heritage: Rural communities have a rich cultural heritage. These communities can preserve traditional music, artistry, and other cultural assets that help to define the identity of a region.
