Joe DiPietro marked his fifth anniversary as president of the University of Tennessee on January 1. In those five years, the statewide UT system has produced 55,000 new college graduates, performed $2.2 billion in research (not counting $7 billion in research performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and managed by UT-Battelle) and conducted outreach with 5 million participants.

As UT president, DiPietro is chief executive officer of the system that includes the flagship campus in Knoxville, campuses in Chattanooga and Martin, the Health Science Center in Memphis, the Space Institute in Tullahoma, and statewide institutes of agriculture and public service. DiPietro is a member of the UT Board of Trustees, and he and the president of Battelle Memorial Institute rotate two-year terms as chairman of the Board of Governors of UT-Battelle. That organization has managed Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy since 2000.

Recognized as one of the NFL’s most exciting announcers, University of Tennessee, Knoxville alumnus Mike Keith just completed his 18th season as “The Voice of the Titans” and previously held posts with the Vol Radio Network, WIVK Radio and WBIR-TV in Knoxville.

He has been named Tennessee Sportscaster of the Year 11 times since 2000 and has won more than 20 Associated Press state awards and two national honors, including the industry’s most prestigious: the Edward R. Murrow Award for nationwide excellence in sports reporting.

Following the address, awards were presented to Julie Hill, Harry McSween and David McBeth. Dr. Joe DiPietro established the President’s Awards in 2015 as a system-wide recognition and the University of Tennessee’s top honor for an employee. Given annually, these awards recognize individuals whose contributions advanced the ideals and goals of the University’s mission to educate, discover, and connect.

The inaugural, 2016 State of the University address was presented at Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville – highlighting a growing partnership between Saint Thomas Health System and the UT Health Science Center. That 30-year partnership expanded in 2015 to increase research and education, and in early 2016 the UT Health Science Center announced plans to build a $40 million facility adjacent to Saint Thomas in Nashville and to increase the number of medical residents from 32 to 200 during the next three years.
